New Document Display Highlights Sports-Related Collections at HSP

Monday, August 14, 2017

HSP is pleased to announce a brand-new document display for summer: Sports of All Sorts. This display, located on HSP's ground floor, is free and open to the public until August 25.

The display highlights materials from some of HSP's sports-related collections, and considers how tennis, cricket, baseball, gymnastics, rowing, and bicycling have changed - or not - over the years. Taking inspiration from the warm summer months, the documents displayed reveal the importance of sports, both at an individual level and to a community. From fitness to bringing people together, sports provide not only a fun social activity or a way to relax, but can also help build a sense of community, or even national identity.

Materials on display include tennis scorecards from Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Billie Jean King and others, tickets and a program from Philadelphia's Centennial Regattas in 1876, and many other visual materials! More information can also be found at hsp.org/history-online/exhibits/sports-all-sorts.
